Love in War - A Historical Display
In 1917, a young Alfred Engel, son of the founder of Bergheim, left for the Great War, leaving behind the love of his life, Louise Henkel. While serving on the front, he wrote several lovely letters home to his dearest, providing insight into the hardship of war, but always professing his love and desire to return to the young Louise. He did just that, and they were married on September 30, 1919 at St. Joseph Honey Creek, raising three daughters. Engel’s time at war and return home is retold in an exhibit opening today on the upstairs archives wall! Stop by and see it through the end of March. Items for the exhibit are on generous loan from the family and local historical re-enactors and collectors and digitized items can be found in the Dietert Historical Archives!
